EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Employee ownership and participation bring a progress within the company, through better working and living conditions for the company and its actors.
This can even be stronger, while positive impact can be observed on public health outside the company, at regional level !

07.03.2007: The CoCo Report: Work, Happiness and Employee Ownership: Companies where workers have a say in decisions and a stake in ownership are more productive because staff are happier, according to a new report in the UK. The study found absence levels were lower and workers were more committed in "co-owned" companies. The British Government was urged to introduce tax incentives to encourage the launch of more co-owned companies. Download the full report

21.12.2006: Research report by Patrick Guiol & Jorge Munoz: Participative management contributes to better public health
25.04.2004: In France, research on the impact of employee ownership on public health

Our colleague David Erdal was a pionneer in this field, showing, in his PhD thesis for the London School of Economics, a positive impact of employee ownership on a set of health indicators, comparing three regions of Italy, with various employee ownership rates. A presentation of this study is available on http://cog.kent.edu/lib/ErdalConferenceWiderEffects_files/frame.htm
(you can also find the document on
http://cog.kent.edu/lib/ErdalConferenceWiderEffects_files/v3_document.htm )
In the same sense, basques colleagues signal decreases in the numbers of divorces or conjugal violences in regions where co-operative enterprises are developing wider (Mondragon Corporacion Cooperativa represents a significant proportion of the whole Basque Country's economy).
Our French colleague Patrick Guiol made similar observations in researches for the French CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research).
This is clearly a new field for researches on employee ownership in the coming years.
